One of the most important life lessons that has remained with me
since high school are these words to live by - Accept It or Change It. I
still remember this lesson from my religion teacher at St. Paul when he
was explaining that with all choices and situations in life, we
essentially are given two options, to accept it, or change it. He
explained that whenever you are confronted with something where you have
to make a choice, you can either accept it, or do something to change
it.
I remember at first being a bit bewildered thinking that there has to be more to it than that. But example after example, he showed that a person has these two options on which direction to take. Sounds surprisingly simple but when you maintain these words in mind with any situation you are deliberating over, it really helps narrow down options and paths you can take.
Some choices are basic and straightforward since there is only one possible answer that can be given. For example, living on planet Earth. Most of us will have to accept this fact, period. Unless we are an astronaut heading to the International Space Station, we all have to accept the fact that we live on planet Earth.
Aside from questions or situations that have no alternative possibilities, here are some points to get your mind thinking about living by the words of Accept It or Change It.
Where you live. You can accept where you live either because you are content to be there, conveniently located, or financially that is what you can afford, or you can change it by selling or waiting until the lease is up to find a new place. Accept It or Change It.
Often late to work. You can accept the fact that you are habitually late to work because you are either a tad slow in the morning, have a ton of things to do before work, or maybe sleep longer than you should. Or you can change this fact by waking up a little earlier, and/or motivating yourself to move faster so that you get to work on time. Accept It or Change It.
Have no money saved. You can either accept the fact that every dollar you earn each month is spent on necessities and there is no way to put any money away in a savings account. Or you can change this fact by analyzing your expenditures and possibly cut back in different areas so that you are able to save a little each and every month. Accept It or Change It.
Have a messy or unkempt home. Have two choices, accept the fact that you have a messy home either because there is no time to clean, or you have a house full of active children, or you can change this fact by devoting a little time every day/week to clean a little and require your children to clean up after themselves. Accept It or Change It.
Eat too much fast food. You can accept the fact that continuing to eat fast food regularly is not going to be conducive to weight loss, or you can change your eating habits and start preparing healthy meals at home to help develop a healthier life. Accept It or Change It.
Out of shape. You can either accept the fact that you may be out of shape, or you can take steps to change this by starting to work out regularly and get in shape. Unfortunately nothing will change unless you take proactive steps to remedy this situation. Accept It or Change It.
From these examples you can see how all questions can be answered with these words to live by - Accept It or Change It. As simple and basic as this may seem, when you keep these words of wisdom in mind with any decision you are faced with, you will see how you can take something that may seem overwhelming, and turn it into something that really is manageable. When you come to terms with the fact that all things in life can either be accepted or changed, then you may be able to accomplish some of the goals that have been in the back of your mind for awhile now.
If you are overweight, don't accept that fact any longer and take the steps to make a definite change. If you are out of shape, don't accept this fact, take steps to make an actual change to get into shape. Let your answer to this question be your motivation to make your dreams become a reality and always remember you have two choices - Accept It or Change It.
